Holle Randy(Holle Sauerwein)
by Sigrid Wynne-Evans

Holle Randy
Holle has a nice variety of patterns and techniques available on bead-patterns.com. She has made rings, bracelets and pins. If you like to crochet, or work in brick stitch, you are certain to find a pattern of Holle's that you will like. I especially like "Holiday Kid" (Model 7950), it's a spunky pattern that is vibrant and makes me smile every time I see it!

Holle was born in Leer (Ostfriesland) in the north of Germany. When she was 2 years old, she and her parents moved to Osnabruck. At 19, Holle moved to Oldenburg and started to study chemistry. Presently, Holle is married and has a house in her parent's garden. She has 3 children (2 girls, nearly 9 and 7 years old and 1 boy 5 years old), 2 rabbits, 1 canary and her beading supplies.

Holle is a stay at home mom. She says this of her experiences:

"At the moment I am happy to have no other day job than just our children. I think some people would say this is no job, but after these years I know so much about important things like "how to get baby cream out of your carpet when it was used as shoe polish" that I think I could easily manage my own room cleaning service."

Holle grew up in a household that encouraged creativity. Her mom taught her a lot. But as far as beads go, Holle says: "I discovered the beads myself. I bought my first beads at 8 years old from my pocket money. I had a slightly bad conscience. What might they think about me spending so much money for so few beads? But as it seems my parents liked my idea and I got an organizer full with wonderful beads for my next birthday."

Since there are very few German books about beadwork or beading techniques, Holle found nothing new to learn and stopped doing beadwork after 3 or 4 years. When she was 18 years old, she saw some wire jewelry with beads. Holle could not stop thinking about what she saw and tried to find out how it was done and 3 or 4 spools of wire later she figured it out! Holle sold some of the pieces to make some extra money. While she was pleased with this technique, it was not what she really wanted, so she stopped beading again.

When Holle's oldest daughter was born, she visited a friend of her husband's. There, she was shown the book "The New Beadwork" by Kathlyn Moss and Alice Scherer. From the graphics in this book, Holle learned shaped brick stitch. Only a few weeks later she found Emily Hackbarth site and tons of new techniques and sites about beadwork.

Holle says she tries not to be influenced by other beaders, but she thinks every beader is influenced by the many beaded pieces she has seen. There is nearly always an interesting shape, color, detail or technique which inspires a beader.

Holle started designing with her second piece of beadwork. At the age of 8, she made tiny bead and wire dolls. She did the first one as described in the directions and the second one was her own creation. The project she chose to learn brick stitch with was her own design too. Holle really loves to learn new techniques, but she says that it is much more fun following her own ideas than staying with the instructions.

Holle's favorite pieces at the moment are her fashion dolls. She started beading them with the idea to create the 4 elements. At this point, water, earth and air are done and fire is next to come. She has also created necklaces that she is very proud of. They were created for special occasions and she may never wear them again.

Holle's biggest joy was to create a necklace out of beaded beads for her mothers 60th birthday with all beads being different from each other. These hollow beaded beads are also her favorite pattern at B-P to date. Another special necklace was the one that is in the Gallery of Judith Bertoglio-Giffen's second book.

Holle enjoys beading "hand flowers", but she is not able to write directions for most of them as they have some beads in them for which she cannot find more of.

Another of Holle's accomplishments was to invite a Japanese TV team in her home. They made a short film about her beadwork for the Japanese TV!

Holle hopes to design more patterns and have them available on bead-patterns.com in the future. In addition, she hopes to one day publish a book on beadwork! I think this would be terrific! With a book in German, perhaps more Europeans will be bit by the bead bug as much as we have been!
